Parapente Lima

Paragliding in Miraflores: a complete guide

Lima is not the city most travelers associate with air sports, but it offers one of the most accessible and well-located flight experiences in South America. The cliffs along the Miraflores boardwalk rise between 70 and 80 meters above the Pacific and create thermal air currents that, on favorable days, allow you to fly for several minutes over the Costa Verde with the city behind you and the ocean below. Anyone arriving in Lima with a free day before continuing to Cusco and without a fear of heights can, in less than an hour, enjoy one of the most memorable experiences of the trip without leaving Miraflores.

How it works

Paragliding in Miraflores is always done in tandem: the visitor is secured in a harness with a certified pilot who controls all the equipment. No previous experience or training is required. The only requirement is not having a fear of heights that prevents you from enjoying the flight, because takeoff from the edge of the cliff is immediate and the sense of height is real from the very first second.

The pilot evaluates wind conditions before each flight. If the air currents are not suitable, the flight does not take place. This means the activity cannot be guaranteed at an exact time but rather within a time window determined by the day’s weather. In Lima, summer between December and April has the clearest days and the most stable conditions for flying. In winter between May and September, coastal fog can limit flights but does not necessarily cancel them, as the cliff currents still function as long as there is no rain, which is almost nonexistent in Lima.

Where you fly from

The takeoff point is in Parque Raimondi, along the Malecón Cisneros in Miraflores, next to the lighthouse. It is an open space at the edge of the cliff with direct views of the Pacific, where pilots set up their equipment and wait for clients. Landing takes place on the Costa Verde beach at the base of the cliff, about seventy meters below, from where you return to the boardwalk either by walking up one of the access paths or using transportation that some operators include.

Operators are physically present in the park during flight hours, and it is possible to book directly on site without prior reservation. However, during peak season between December and March and on weekends, there may be wait times due to demand. Booking in advance ensures access without waiting.

How long the flight lasts and how much it costs

A tandem paragliding flight from the Miraflores cliffs lasts between 10 and 15 minutes. During that time, the pilot may perform gentle maneuvers to extend the duration or distance depending on wind conditions. It is not a long flight, but it is enough to fly over the Costa Verde, see Lima’s coastline from above, appreciate the scale of the cliffs, and land on the beach with a perspective of the city that does not exist from the ground.

The price of a tandem flight is around 250 soles per person. Some operators offer video or photos of the flight for an additional cost. It is worth asking before takeoff, as the footage captured from the pilot’s helmet camera offers a perspective that cannot be replicated from the ground.

Flights start at 10:00 a.m.

Flights begin at 10:00 a.m. every day, weather permitting. The most active period is between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., when the air currents are most stable. In the afternoon, wind conditions can change, and some operators reduce or suspend flights depending on safety conditions.

The best plan for those who want to see Lima from the air and continue with their day is to arrive at Parque Raimondi between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m., complete the flight, and then walk along the boardwalk toward Parque del Amor or Larcomar. The flight and return from the beach to the boardwalk take no more than 45 minutes in total.

What to bring and what not to do

You should wear closed shoes with good grip because takeoff requires running a few steps at the edge of the cliff before the paraglider fills with air. Sandals or loose footwear are not suitable. Clothing has no strict requirements, but bringing an extra layer is recommended because it can feel colder at altitude, especially during winter months.

People with serious heart or respiratory conditions should consult a doctor before flying. There is a weight limit that operators will inform you about at the time of booking, usually around 100 to 110 kilograms.

You should not attempt to take out your phone during the flight unless it is securely attached, as the risk of dropping it is real. Some operators prohibit phone use during the flight and offer their own recordings. If you want to photograph the flight from the ground, the best vantage point is from the cliff edge at Parque Raimondi, where you can capture the entire trajectory from takeoff.

Who this experience is for

Paragliding in Miraflores makes sense for any traveler with at least half a morning free in Lima, who is not afraid of heights and wants a completely different perspective of the city from what museums and historic districts offer. It is an activity that requires no physical preparation, does not take much time, and creates a memory that for many travelers becomes one of the most vivid of their entire trip to Peru.

It is not suitable for those with severe vertigo, those who prefer cultural activities with their limited time in Lima, or those with physical conditions that make it unsafe.
