Perfect Season to Explore Ausangate

Ausangate, in the Vilcanota mountain range, is one of the most impressive high-altitude treks in Cusco. Hiking among glaciers, turquoise lakes, and high-Andean villages is an unforgettable experience, but the weather can change suddenly. Choosing the right season is key to enjoying the scenery safely.

In the Ausangate area there are two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. Each one offers a different experience.

Dry Season: The Best Time for Trekking

In general, the best time to explore Ausangate is during the dry season, from May to September. During these months there is very little rain, skies are usually clear, and the trails are more stable, which makes the trek safer and the views better.

What to Expect in the Dry Season (May to September)

  • Mostly sunny days with good visibility
  • Little to no rainfall
  • Cold nights, with temperatures below freezing at higher campsites
  • Better conditions for camping and crossing high mountain passes

Different climate guides agree that these months are the most recommended for trekking routes in Ausangate, as they combine clear skies with low precipitation.

Month by Month: When to Go to Ausangate

Although the dry season is ideal, each month has its own particular characteristics.

May and June

  • Beginning of the dry season
  • Landscapes still green after the rains
  • Sunny days and very cold nights
  • Excellent balance between good weather and fewer visitors at the beginning of May

July and August

  • The driest months of the year and also the coldest
  • Very clear skies, ideal for mountain photography
  • Nights and early mornings with temperatures that can drop several degrees below freezing
  • More travelers in Cusco in general (high tourist season)

September

  • It is still dry, but temperatures start to become slightly milder
  • Less extreme cold than in July and August
  • A good month for those who want stable weather with a bit less cold

Shoulder Season: April, October, and November

The months of April, October, and part of November can be an interesting option for those looking for quieter trails and who are willing to accept some risk of light rain.

  • April: end of the rainy season; the landscape is very green, but there can be days with showers.
  • October: beginning of the rains; you can still have several stable days, but the weather becomes more unpredictable.

During this time of year, the weather can change quickly. It is important to be prepared with good waterproof clothing and to accept that you might hike with rain or fog on some days.

Rainy Season: December to March

The rainy season runs approximately from December to March. During these months the weather is much more unstable:

  • Frequent rain, sometimes heavy
  • Slippery, muddy trails
  • Higher risk of landslides and swollen rivers
  • Lower visibility due to clouds and fog

February is usually considered the most complicated month, and many agencies limit or suspend departures for safety reasons.

For travelers with little high-altitude experience, it is not recommended to plan Ausangate during these months.

So, What Is the Perfect Season?

In summary:

  • Best time recommended: May to September, the dry season, with clear days and minimal rain.
  • Best balance between weather and number of visitors: May, June, and September.
  • For those seeking more solitude and willing to accept some rain: April, October, and part of November.
  • Least recommended time: December to March, especially February, due to heavy rains and higher risk on the route.
