If you’re planning to climb a mountain inside Machu Picchu, this is your circuit. Circuit 1, also known as the Panoramic Circuit, was designed for those who want to see the citadel from above and not just walk through it from the inside. It is the only one that provides access to Machu Picchu Mountain, the Sun Gate, and the Inca Bridge three of the most sought-after spots in the site and also the ones with the most limited availability of all.

What is Circuit 1 exactly?
Circuit 1 takes you through the upper section of the citadel, through the viewpoint sectors and high-altitude routes that lie outside the classic temple tour. It is not an interior archaeology circuit but one of landscape and altitude. From the points it covers, you can see the entire citadel from above, the Urubamba River canyon, the jungle surrounding the complex, and the snow-capped mountains on clear days. It is a completely different perspective from Circuit 2, which is why many travelers who have already visited Machu Picchu choose this route on their second visit.
The four routes available within Circuit 1
Within Circuit 1 there is no single fixed route but four different ones. When purchasing your ticket you must choose which of the four you will take, as the ticket is specific to one route only.
Route 1-A: Machu Picchu Mountain
This is the most demanding route and the most impressive in terms of views. The trail climbs stone staircases to the summit of Machu Picchu Mountain at 3,082 meters above sea level. The ascent takes between an hour and a half and two hours depending on your pace, and the descent another 45 minutes to an hour. From the summit, the perspective of the citadel is the widest in the entire site: you can see the full archaeological complex, the valley, the river, and the high jungle on the horizon.
It is restricted to visitors 18 and older and requires good physical condition. It is not suitable for people with heart conditions, severe vertigo, or difficulty walking on steep terrain. The maximum time allowed inside the citadel when this route is included is approximately one hour before starting the ascent.
Route 1-B: Upper Terrace
This route covers the viewpoints in the upper section of the citadel without the need to climb any mountain. It allows you to see the complex from the upper agricultural sectors, walk along the terraces, and take in wide panoramic views of the site with less physical effort than Route 1-A. It is a great alternative if you want the high-altitude perspective of Circuit 1 without the demands of a long ascent. It has no age restriction or special physical condition requirement.
Route 1-C: Intipunku or Sun Gate
The Sun Gate is the original entrance to Machu Picchu along the Inca Trail. It is located at 2,745 meters above sea level and from there you get a frontal view of the citadel the same vantage point that travelers arriving along the pre-Hispanic trail once had. The round trip takes approximately 2 hours. This route is available only during high season and is one of the most photogenic spots in the site for those looking for a different image beyond the classic postcard view.
Route 1-D: Inca Bridge
The Inca Bridge is an original hanging structure built by the Incas over a cliff, along the path that connected the citadel to the Amazon region. Getting there takes about 30 minutes along a side trail through the vegetation, away from the main tourist flow. It is one of the least crowded spots in the entire site and the one that offers the most intimate look at Inca engineering outside the main complex. Available only during high season and restricted to visitors 18 and older.
How much time do you have inside the site with this circuit?
The time inside Machu Picchu with Circuit 1 depends on the route you choose. If you climb Machu Picchu Mountain, the total time including the ascent and descent is around 4 hours. For the other routes, the maximum time allowed inside the site is 2 hours before or after the additional route. It is important to plan your day carefully so you don’t run short on time or arrive at the exit point outside the permitted hours.
Who is Circuit 1 designed for?
Circuit 1 is for travelers who want something beyond the standard tour. If you’re looking for views from the heights, if you’ve already explored the citadel from the inside and want a different perspective, or if you’re planning to hike the Inca Trail and want to arrive through the Sun Gate, this is your circuit. It is not the most recommended option for a first visit if the goal is to explore the temples and interior sectors of the citadel, as Circuit 1 does not include that route.
For families with young children or people with limited mobility, Route 1-B of the Upper Terrace is the only accessible option within this circuit. The other routes require considerable physical effort.
Spots sell out first on this circuit
Route 1-A of Machu Picchu Mountain has the most limited availability after Huayna Picchu Mountain in Circuit 3. If you’re planning to climb any mountain inside the site, buying your ticket as far in advance as possible is not optional advice. During high season between June and August, spots for these routes can sell out months ahead of time. Booking late means losing the option and having to settle for whatever is still available.
