Buying your Machu Picchu ticket is the first real step of your trip, and also the one that creates the most questions. The good news is that the process is not difficult if you know exactly where to do it and what information to have ready before you begin. Before buying: what you need to decide first
Before opening any website and paying, you need to be clear on two things: which circuit you want to visit and on what date you will visit the citadel. This is not a minor detail. Each ticket gives access to only one specific circuit, and once it is issued, neither the route, the date, nor the time can be changed. If you make a mistake when choosing, you lose the money and have to buy a new ticket from scratch.
The three available circuits are Panoramic, Classic, and Royalty. The Classic circuit is the most complete for a first visit and includes the most well-known sectors of the citadel. The Panoramic circuit is ideal if you want to hike one of the mountains within the site. The Royalty circuit covers the lower part and is the most physically accessible. Take a few minutes to think about which one best fits your time and your physical condition before continuing.
Where to buy the official ticket
The official sale of Machu Picchu tickets is managed by Peru’s Ministry of Culture through its digital ticketing platform. It is the only government-authorized channel for this. Any other page you find online is an intermediary, not the official direct government channel.
You can also buy in person. In Aguas Calientes, there is a Ministry of Culture office that is open every day from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and tickets purchased there are valid only for the following day. This option only makes sense if you are already in town and need a last-minute ticket, but in high season the in-person quota is very limited, and there is no guarantee you will get the date you need.
The purchase process step by step
Step 1: create your account on the platform
The first thing you need to do is register with your personal information and an email address you can easily access. That is where you will receive the purchase confirmation and the digital ticket. Without a created account, you cannot move forward in the process.
Step 2: choose the circuit, date, and time
Once inside, select the circuit you want to visit, the exact date of your visit, and the available entry time. Review each field carefully before continuing because there is no possibility of changes after payment. The platform gives you a 15-minute limit to complete all the information. If you do not finish within that time, the session closes and you have to start again from the beginning.
Step 3: enter your personal details correctly
Have your passport or identity document in hand before starting this step. The name you enter on the ticket must match exactly the physical document you will present at the entrance to the citadel. A spelling mistake, even a minor one, can prevent you from entering on the day of your visit with no possibility of correction.
Step 4: select your rate
The platform shows different rates depending on your nationality. Foreign tourists pay the general rate, which is the highest. Citizens of Andean Community countries such as Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador have access to an intermediate rate. Peruvian citizens have reduced prices, and people born in Cusco can enter free of charge on Sundays by generating their free ticket, subject to the day’s availability.
Step 5: make the payment
Payment can be made by credit or debit card directly on the platform, which is the quickest and most practical option from any country. There is also the option to pay in cash at any Banco de la Nación branch within Peru. If you pay by card, keep in mind that the system applies an additional bank fee to the base ticket price.
Step 6: download and save your ticket
After payment, you will receive an email with your digital ticket. Download it to your phone and also keep a printed version just in case. On the day of your visit, you must present the ticket together with the physical identity document you used to register. Without both, you cannot enter the site.
How far in advance should you buy?
The most requested circuits can sell out weeks ahead depending on the time of year. If you are traveling between June and August, the safest choice is to buy 3 or 4 months in advance. For the rest of the year, 4 to 6 weeks is usually enough, although the earlier you book, the more peace of mind you will have with the time and circuit you want.
Three mistakes you should avoid
The first is booking the train before having your ticket confirmed. Do it the other way around: first secure the entry ticket with the circuit and time you need, and then arrange the train based on that date.
The second is entering incorrect information when registering. Double-check your name, passport number, and visit date before paying. No corrections are possible once the ticket has been issued.
The third is arriving in Aguas Calientes without a ticket and trusting that you will get one there the same day. In high season, in-person quotas sell out early, and ending up without a ticket after making it all the way to town is a major problem that is easily avoided by planning ahead.
