At the highest point of the urban area of Machu Picchu, on a platform reached by climbing a steep stone staircase, there is a carved rock unlike any other at the site. It is not a wall, not an enclosure, and not a passageway. It is a sculptural piece carved directly from the bedrock of the mountain, with a central prism shaped protrusion measuring approximately 60 centimeters in height. The Incas called it the Intihuatana.
The word comes from Quechua: inti means sun, and huatana comes from the verb huatar, which can be translated as to tie or bind. The literal translation most often used, “the place where the sun is tied,” is not just poetic. It reflects a worldview in which the movement of the sun could be observed, measured, and in a certain way controlled through ritual.

What exactly is the Intihuatana
The Intihuatana is a granite sculpture carved as a single block from the mountain’s bedrock. It has an asymmetrical and irregular shape that is not the result of aesthetic whim. Each face of the central prism is oriented toward a specific cardinal point, and the sloping planes of the base were carved with that same logic of orientation.
For decades, the Intihuatana was described exclusively as a gnomon, meaning an instrument used to tell the time through the shadow cast by the central prism on the stone base. That function does exist, but archaeological and archaeoastronomical studies from the last thirty years have made it clear that the piece had a broader purpose: it was an instrument for astronomical observation, a calendrical marker, and at the same time an object of worship.
Unlike a conventional sundial, a flat surface with a pointer, the Intihuatana is three dimensional. Its different faces cast shadows at different angles depending on the position of the sun in the sky, which makes it possible to read not only the hour of the day, but also the time of year.

The location within Machu Picchu
The Intihuatana stands at the top of a stepped pyramid in the sacred sector of the citadel. This position is not accidental. It was placed so that from its platform there is a direct view of the horizon in several directions, with no building or structure blocking it.
To the north, the outline of Huayna Picchu can be seen. To the south, Machu Picchu Mountain closes the horizon. To the east, the Urubamba River valley stretches more than 400 meters below. This full panorama was necessary for the type of observations made there. It was not enough to see the sun. It also mattered to identify the exact point on the horizon where it rose or set at different times of the year.
The stepped pyramid on which it stands was built specifically to raise the stone above the level of the rest of the citadel. Climbing those uneven stone steps was not only a physical movement. It was access to a distinct space reserved for those whose role was to interpret the calendar and direct ceremonies associated with the sun.
How it works as a solar instrument
The central prism of the Intihuatana has four sides oriented approximately toward the cardinal points. When the sun is at its highest position at midday, the shadow of the prism is minimal or almost nonexistent. This happens twice a year, on the dates when the sun passes directly overhead at Machu Picchu, around January 30 and November 13. On those days, at 12:00 solar noon, the stone casts no noticeable shadow on any of its faces.
This phenomenon, the sun’s passage through the zenith, has special significance in the intertropical zone, where it occurs twice a year. For the Incas, it was an event of ritual importance that marked transitions in the agricultural and ceremonial calendar. The fact that the Intihuatana was designed to make that moment visible through the absence of shadow as a signal suggests that it was conceived as a precision instrument and not simply as a symbolic object.
At the solstices, the shadows cast by the prism reach their maximum length toward the north or the south, depending on the time of year. At the equinoxes in March and September, the shadow falls almost perfectly symmetrically across the base. Each of these positions was, for Inca priests, a reading of the state of time and an indicator for organizing collective activities.
The Intihuatana and the Inca calendar
The Incas used a calendrical system that combined the solar cycle with the lunar cycle. The 365 day solar year regulated agricultural activities. The 328 day lunar year organized religious ceremonies. Harmonizing both cycles required instruments of observation and fixed reference points.
The Intihuatana was one of those reference points. The dates it marked, the solstices, the equinoxes, and the days of zenith passage, coincide with key moments in the Andean agricultural calendar: the beginning of sowing, the rainy season, and the harvest. It was not just an abstract measurement of time. It was a planning tool for a society whose economy depended directly on the agricultural cycle.
Some researchers, including the archaeoastronomer Johan Reinhard, have also pointed out that the Intihuatana was part of a broader system of alignments within the citadel itself. The Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Three Windows, and the Intihuatana are not isolated structures. Their orientations reflect an overall plan that took the path of the sun into account throughout the entire year.
The ritual meaning: tying the sun
The idea of “tying the sun,” contained in the name Intihuatana, is related to a belief recorded by colonial chroniclers in the sixteenth century. According to those accounts, during the winter solstice in June, when the days are shortest and the sun moves away toward the north, priests performed a ceremony in which they symbolically tied the sun to the stone so that it would not continue moving farther away.
This account has been interpreted in different ways. Some researchers read it as a ritual metaphor expressing the Inca state’s ability to mediate between people and natural forces. Others understand it more literally. The ceremony was an act of communication with Inti in which the priests announced the solstice and asked for the sun’s return toward the south.
In any case, the Intihuatana was not simply a measuring instrument. It was also the physical support of a religious practice that placed calendar specialists, the amautas and the priests of Inti, in a position of authority within Inca society. Whoever controlled time controlled agriculture, and whoever controlled agriculture controlled power.

The 2000 accident and the current condition of the stone
In September 2000, during the filming of a television commercial for a beer company, a production crane fell onto the Intihuatana and broke off one corner of the central prism. The damage was immediate and visible. A fragment of the protrusion came off, permanently altering the original shape of the sculpture.
Peru’s Ministry of Culture took legal action against the production company responsible, and the incident sparked a debate about the limits of commercial use at archaeological sites. Since then, access to the Intihuatana has been restricted. Visitors cannot approach closer than one meter from the stone, and photographing it with drones or equipment that requires installations on the ground is prohibited.
The detached fragment was not put back in place. The Ministry of Culture decided to leave the stone in its current state as testimony to the damage, a position that remains a subject of debate among conservators and archaeologists.
What to keep in mind when visiting
The Intihuatana is part of the standard Machu Picchu circuit, but reaching it requires climbing a steep stone staircase. For those with mobility difficulties, that section should be considered before planning the visit.
Some practical points to keep in mind:
- Recommended time: early in the morning, between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m., when the light comes from the side and the shadows on the stone are more pronounced. It is also the time when there are fewer people at the site.
- Special dates: if you visit around June 21 or December 21, the position of the shadows at the solstice gives the visit added value from an astronomical point of view.
- Specialized guide: a guide trained in archaeoastronomy or Inca history can make a big difference. Seen without context, the stone may appear less striking than it really is. With the right context, it becomes one of the richest points of the tour.
- Restrictions: you cannot touch the stone or go beyond the railings installed around the platform.

The Intihuatana beyond Machu Picchu
The one at Machu Picchu was not the only Intihuatana that existed in the Tawantinsuyo. There were similar stones in Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and several other administrative and religious centers of the empire. However, most of them were destroyed during the Spanish conquest. Evangelizers identified these stones as objects of pagan worship and ordered their demolition.
The Intihuatana at Machu Picchu survived precisely because the citadel was never found by the conquerors. The jungle covered the site and kept it out of reach of colonial expeditions for nearly four centuries. That circumstance, Machu Picchu’s isolation during the colonial period, is the reason why this instrument still exists today in conditions so close to the original ones.
Climbing up to the Intihuatana and taking a few minutes to observe the shadow cast by the prism on the granite base is one of those moments when the distance between the present and the past suddenly narrows. You do not need to know astronomy or archaeology to understand that this stone was made with a very precise intention. And that intention, five hundred years later, is still readable.
