Archaeological Site of Moray

An agricultural laboratory in the heart of the Sacred Valley

Located 38 kilometers northwest of Cusco and 7 kilometers from the town of Maras, Moray sits at 3,500 meters above sea level. This archaeological site stands out for its four natural depressions transformed by the Incas into concentric circular terraces that resemble a sunken amphitheater. However, its true purpose was far more scientific: it functioned as a sophisticated agricultural engineering laboratory that demonstrates the Incas’ advanced knowledge.

The name “Moray” comes from Quechua, although historians debate its exact meaning. Some relate it to “Aymoray” (the harvest month in the Inca calendar), others to “Moraya” (dehydrated potato), and some suggest it comes from the combination of “Muyu” (round) and “Uruy” (down). Whatever its origin, the name carries centuries of Andean wisdom.

The circular terraces: architecture that defies time

Moray is made up of three circular complexes covering 37 hectares. The largest depression, called Qechuyoq, reaches 150 meters deep with 12 superimposed terrace levels, each 1.80 meters high, and 183 meters in diameter at the top. To descend between terraces, the Incas built “sarunas” (stone steps embedded in the walls). The terraces were filled with fertile soil brought from different regions of the Inca Empire, and their geometric precision is extraordinary. Their true function was to create controlled microclimates for large-scale agricultural experimentation.

The microclimate system

Moray works as a gigantic natural thermal trap. The temperature in the deepest terrace can be up to 15 degrees Celsius higher than the uppermost terrace. This difference is not accidental: the Incas used the depth, the orientation toward the sun, and the natural shelter of the surrounding mountains to generate up to 20 different microclimates within the same complex.

The four lowest terraces are more humid and record average temperatures around 0°C. The next four levels have temperatures 2 to 3 degrees higher. The upper terraces experience variations depending on sunlight exposure and seasonal changes. This thermal stratification is most evident during the dry season, from May to October, when climatic differences become more pronounced.

Each terrace represented an entire ecological zone. What the Incas achieved was to compress the climatic conditions of their whole empire into barely 150 meters of depth. One terrace could simulate the coastal climate, another the high plateau, and another the cloud forest conditions.

Imperial-scale agricultural experimentation

Moray was the main agricultural research center of the Inca Empire. Seeds brought from all corners of the territory were tested here: from Andean potatoes to coca leaves, along with corn and hundreds of varieties of tubers and grains.

The process was methodical: Inca agronomists planted the same species at different levels to observe how they behaved under varying conditions of temperature, humidity, and altitude. This knowledge allowed them to determine exactly which crops to plant in each region of the empire and to predict annual food production.

A sophisticated irrigation system distributed water through canals connecting all the terraces. At the bottom of each circular depression, a drainage system stored rainwater, preventing flooding and maintaining necessary humidity at each level. This hydraulic technology shows that the Incas understood not only agriculture but also water management in complex ecosystems.

According to studies by anthropologist John Earls, each terrace at Moray equaled approximately one thousand meters of altitudinal difference under normal cultivation conditions. This means that in a single day, an Inca researcher could observe how a plant developed in conditions equivalent to traveling from the coast to the highlands.

Astronomical observatory or agricultural laboratory?

There is debate among researchers about whether Moray also functioned as an astronomical observatory. Cusco astronomer Edwin Salazar documented stones strategically placed on the terraces that mark shadow limits during equinoxes and solstices. The Incas needed these markers to precisely determine planting and harvesting times.

Another fascinating theory suggests that Moray’s depressions are not entirely natural, but formed by the impact of meteorite fragments. This hypothesis, proposed in the 1960s and revisited in the early 21st century, does not contradict the site’s agricultural use; instead, it could explain why the Incas chose this specific location for their experimental center.

How to get to Moray from Cusco

The distance from Cusco to Moray is approximately 50 kilometers by road, and the journey offers several options depending on your budget and travel style.

On an organized tour

The most practical way to visit Moray is by booking a tour that includes the Maras Salt Mines. These tours depart daily from Cusco around 8 a.m. and return around 2 p.m. The average cost is 60 USD per person and includes transportation, a professional guide, and free time to explore. Some agencies offer ATV tours for about 66 USD, ideal if you want something more adventurous.

On your own

If you prefer to travel independently, take a colectivo or bus from the Santiago terminal in Cusco toward Urubamba. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Maras junction (the trip lasts about one hour and costs 5–10 soles). From the crossroads, you can walk to Maras (about 30 minutes) or take a local taxi.

From the town of Maras to Moray is 7 kilometers. You can hire a taxi in the main square for 20–30 soles round trip with waiting time included, or walk (about 1.5 hours) if you enjoy hiking and altitude doesn’t affect you too much.

By mountain bike

For the more adventurous, several operators offer mountain bike tours from Cruzpata to Moray. The route crosses farmland and offers spectacular views of the Veronica and Chicon snow-capped peaks. It is a physically demanding but unforgettable experience, usually including an outdoor picnic.

Practical information for your visit

Entrance ticket and schedules

Moray can only be visited with the Cusco Tourist Ticket, which is not sold individually. The Partial Tourist Ticket III includes Moray, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Chinchero; it costs 70 soles for foreigners and 40 soles for Peruvians, and is valid for 2 days. If you plan to visit more archaeological sites, the Full Tourist Ticket (130 soles for foreigners, 70 soles for Peruvians) is valid for 10 days and grants access to 16 attractions in Cusco and the Sacred Valley.

You can purchase the ticket at the entrance of Moray or at the offices located at Avenida El Sol 103 in Cusco’s historic center. Children under 10 enter for free, and students with ISIC card receive a discount.

Visiting hours are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., every day of the year including Sundays and holidays. Touring the site takes about one hour.

What to bring

The altitude in Moray is similar to Cusco, so if you’re already acclimatized, you shouldn’t have issues. However, the weather can be tricky: during the day the sun is strong (bring sunscreen SPF 50+, hat, and sunglasses), but the wind can be cold, especially early in the morning or at sunset.

Dress in layers: a T-shirt, a windbreaker, and something warm for the morning. Comfortable shoes with good grip are essential since you’ll walk on uneven and possibly slippery surfaces if it has rained. Bring bottled water, as there are no vendors inside the archaeological site.

It is currently forbidden to descend to the lower terraces to protect the structures from deterioration. The tourist circuit takes place along the perimeter paths surrounding the depressions, offering spectacular panoramic views from different angles.

When to visit Maras and Moray

Moray can be visited year-round, but the experience varies depending on the season. Between April and October (dry season), the days are clear and perfect for photography, with intense blue skies contrasting with the green terraces. Mid-morning light (9–11 a.m.) is ideal for capturing the depth of the circular depressions.

Between November and March (rainy season), the landscape is greener and more dramatic, but rain is common in the afternoons. If visiting during this season, plan to arrive early in the morning.

Every October 8th, the Moray Raymi is celebrated, an agricultural festival where hundreds of residents from nearby communities gather on the terraces for folkloric dances and ritual ceremonies honoring Pachamama. If your trip coincides with this date, you’ll witness an authentic celebration connected to Inca traditions.

Combine your visit

Moray is rarely visited on its own. Just 10 minutes away by car are the famous Maras Salt Mines, thousands of natural salt pools exploited since pre-Inca times. The contrast between the two sites is fascinating: while Moray focuses on the earth and agriculture, the salt mines harness a salty underground spring emerging from the mountain.

The town of Maras also deserves a stop. Its cobblestone streets, colonial portals, and the San Francisco church preserve the charm of the Viceroyalty era. If time allows, Chinchero is 30 minutes away and combines an important archaeological site with an artisan market where traditional Andean weaving is still practiced.

Moray’s scientific legacy

Moray is not just a relic of the past: it is a living testament to the scientific method applied more than 500 years ago. The Incas developed here a research system that included systematic observation, controlled experimentation, recording results, and applying the knowledge gained.

The ability to create 20 different microclimates in a relatively small space demonstrates a deep understanding of meteorology, thermal physics, and agricultural ecology. This knowledge allowed the Inca Empire to feed millions of people across one of the most challenging territories on the planet: from coastal deserts to the high plateau, through Andean canyons and Amazonian forests.

Protection and conservation

Moray was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation and is part of the Monumental Zone of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Its administration is overseen by the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco in coordination with the District Municipality of Maras.

Conservation efforts include maintaining the original drainage systems, restoring walls damaged by erosion, and strictly controlling tourist flow to minimize impact on the structures. The prohibition against descending to the lower terraces is part of this preservation strategy.

As a visitor, your responsibility includes respecting signs, not littering, not touching or climbing the retaining walls, and following park ranger instructions. Moray has survived five centuries, and with proper care, it will continue to amaze future generations.
