By luxury train: the Andean Explorer
The Belmond Andean Explorer is the luxury train operated by Peru Rail on the route between Puno and Cusco. The journey takes approximately 10 hours on a scenic route with private cabins, onboard dining, and exclusive experiences. Prices start at $4,000 for a double cabin on the two-day, one-night journey. It is a complete experience in itself, aimed at travelers seeking luxury and who do not have budget restrictions.

For most travelers, the bus is the most practical and budget-friendly option. The Andean Explorer is ideal for those who want the Puno–Cusco leg to be part of the travel experience, not just transportation.
Leg 2: from Cusco to Machu Picchu
Once in Cusco, you need to travel to the Ollantaytambo station in the Sacred Valley, about 1 hour and 45 minutes away by road. From there, Peru Rail and Inca Rail operate daily departures to Aguas Calientes, with a train ride of between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, travelers take the Consettur bus to the entrance of the citadel, which adds another 25 to 30 minutes.
How many days do you need from Puno?
The full trip from Puno to Machu Picchu cannot comfortably be done in a single day. The most recommended option is to organize the itinerary over at least two or three days.
2-day option
On the first day, you travel from Puno to Cusco by early morning or morning bus, arriving in Cusco around midday. In the afternoon, you take the train to Aguas Calientes and spend the night there. On the second day, you visit Machu Picchu early, taking advantage of the first entrance time slot.
3-day option
On the first day, you travel from Puno to Cusco and rest in the city to acclimatize to the 3,400-meter altitude. On the second day, you take the train to Aguas Calientes and stay overnight. On the third day, you visit the citadel at a relaxed pace and return to Cusco in the afternoon. This option is more advisable because it avoids the accumulated fatigue of reaching Machu Picchu directly after a long trip.
Acclimatization: a factor you cannot ignore
Puno sits at 3,827 meters above sea level and Cusco at 3,400 meters. Although both cities are at high altitude, the body still needs time to adapt before doing intense physical activity. Going from Puno to Cusco and leaving for Machu Picchu the next day is possible, but for those who are not used to the altitude, it can be exhausting. Sleeping at least one night in Cusco before continuing the trip helps the body perform better when it is time to explore the citadel.
